The test measures skills your critical thinking, analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning.

GMAT 2024 Exam – Focus Edition

GMAT Focus Edition is a new version of the test that focuses on fewer topics, allowing candidates to demonstrate their proficiency in key areas without being overwhelmed by a wide range of subjects. This edition is designed to provide a more streamlined testing experience for candidates who may be facing challenges due to the pandemic.

The current GMAT exam consists of four sections:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Integrated Reasoning
  • Analytical Writing

The test includes a mix of multiple-choice and non-multiple-choice questions, with a total of 79 questions in the first three sections and one descriptive question in the analytical writing section.

Registration for the GMAT Focus Edition began on August 29, 2023, and will continue to be available alongside the regular GMAT until early next year. Candidates can register for either version of the test at any time, with ongoing registration opportunities.

Candidates can choose to take the GMAT at a exam center or online, depending on their preferences and circumstances. The online exam offers the flexibility of taking the test from the comfort of home, while the exam center option provides a more traditional testing environment.

Each year, GMAT publishes an updated GMAT official guide for test-takers. The guide includes all questions from previous years and introduces some new questions for practice.

  • Quantitative section – 262 questions with 32 new additions.
  • Data Sufficiency section – 502 questions with 10 new questions.
  • Verbal section – 50 new questions have been added, with 31 in GMAT Sentence Correction and 19 in Critical Reasoning.

  3. Educational Qualification: Applicants need an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution to be eligible. It’s recommended to have graduated from a recognized university. Many test takers are working professionals with 3-5 years of experience.
  4. Age Limit: There is no upper age limit, but 18 years is preferred. Test takers aged 13-17 need a permission letter from parents.
  5. Minimum Cutoff Requirement: To take the GMAT, there are no set minimum scores required. However, top business schools in the USA and UK typically expect a GMAT score for admission. Most prestigious universities worldwide recognize a minimum GMAT score of 715.
  6. Professional Background: Various business programs globally accept the GMAT exam, some requiring work experience while others do not. Top business schools prefer candidates with industry experience. During the application process, the admission committee assesses the applicant’s work experience and its relevance to the business world.
  7. GMAT Attempt Limits: GMAT can be taken up to five times in a year, which equates to five attempts within 12 months. MBA programs usually consider only the most recent scores. There are specific rules for GMAT attempts:
    • A candidate can retake the GMAT only 16 days after the initial test date.
    • Within a year, a candidate can take the GMAT up to five times.
    • In a lifetime, a test taker can attempt the exam a maximum of eight times.
    • If a candidate achieves a perfect GMAT score, they must wait five years before retaking the exam.
    • Each GMAT attempt requires registration.
  8. Language Medium: Candidates from non-English speaking countries can also take the GMAT. Many of these test takers need to demonstrate English proficiency through IELTS or TOEFL. With proper preparation, one can excel in the exam.
  9. Palm Vein Identification in GMAT: GMAC uses palm vein identification to prevent fraud during exams. Candidates must provide a palm vein impression as identity proof during check-in. This biometric reader ensures that individuals cannot take the GMAT on behalf of others, maintaining the exam’s integrity.

FAQs

  1. Why is the “GMAT Focus Edition” name being changed to the “GMAT Exam?”
    • The “GMAT Focus Edition” name served as a crucial distinction between it and the previous version of the GMAT while both were in the market in late 2023 and early 2024. Now, with only one version of the exam available, we are transitioning back to using the “GMAT Exam” name from July 1 onward.
  2. What exactly is changing?
